Recently there has been quite an upsurge of Broodthaers again, locally at least, after the extensive wandering show (NY, Düsseldorf, Madrid) and a chance rekindling of a all-but-forgotten project for a visit to a castle at Gaasbeek, Strombeek and such, and not to forget the upcoming show at the contemporary art museum Antwerp (sep oct) … But to be honest, the most curious and perhaps most related project by far is the strange apparition in a small shop “Chez le droguiste op den Hoek” where one is confronted with the questionable and enigmatic display of wanton references combined with the poetic juxtaposition of real and fake beach scenes reminiscent of the marchand du sel, and in effect, there are so many cross references as to make one’s brain wither slightly… Making it imperative to perhaps partake of some of the smelling salts on offer… For, was this not a pharmacie?

No? What then… A literary hole in the wall, a poetic licence to make fun of passers-by? One would be excused for being confused, for some of the decals displayed – ici n’est pas la-bas- and the interdiction of all manner of conceptual art seemed quite preposterous, given the tonality of the whole… Mer a boire, indeed! On the one hand the sea-less beach scene could be construed as a potentiality: just add water to create a ocean of meaning… More a storm of associations, since the references whirled wildly about, wth the Marcels entwined between shirt collars (Van Laack) and sleeveless versions of puns, visual and otherwise, as shaken out of the salt dispenser à la friterie… Etand donnée and Gaz d’Eclairage… Vin Aigre for the poor melancholic…

It was in fact the presentation of a Book that was being embellished here: the presentation of Rocky Witzenstein… (at first I thought related to Kostrowitz) as author of “Marcel Broodthaers in other words” in the obligatory NRF Gallimard livery, a book of abstract aphorisms perhaps, or rather a collection of anagrams of the illustrious artist’s name… Which was also presented as a digital cybernetic version read out by an amalgamated computer voice devoid of feeling and intonation….

The hostess in the meantime, the flamboyant Madame d’L, proceeded to spruce herself up for a introductory word or two… She had obviously already tasted some of the bottles on offer, and her soliloquy was a bit difficult to understand between slurs and dangling cigarette, but in the end everyone seemed quite charmed by the introduction and proceeded to the more consumerist aspect of the gathering… The consumption of a very tasty local beer as well as fine vintages and an array of nibbles allsorts… But yes, also books of course…

In fact the author’s place at the signature table had been usurped by a black-clad figure from the northern metropolis known as Daniel Von W…. Who, in his notoriously unabashed fashionist-a-way had taken place in the authors chair and began to sign the books as were they his own, in addition to overcharging the hapless punter, and even rifling though a collector’s purse even before she could decide on how much she might want to pay for a signed multiple… One has to admit it is an effective strategy widely practiced in the world of business, but unseen here in the context of a polite cultural gathering, where financial gain is whispered as a specially repugnant four-letter word…

But the tone was set from the outset with the reference to the marchand du sel, who, in his wisdom, of folly, however one might see it, had set the traditional art world on it’s head with his fountain, one of which by chance, was (still crated) standing behind the sumptuous banquet table at which the artist in his belgian femur-tex-hat had take place later in the afternoon… Even the corner urinal in the garden was not made use of, out of respect perhaps, or just because it was difficult to access…

Anyway, this show-case exhibition is quite a sight for sore eyes, ears, throat and mouth… In fact, a good dose can do no harm… There are still many aspects to be discovered… i ran by just a few here… But there needs to be more investigation into the ” Narciss” mirrored eyeglasses (within, for more introspection) as well as the enigmatic nest balancing in the garden of eden before Hyronimous’ egg with in it…. indeed… A shaker of pepper! Not everyone likes their breakfast salty, I know, but what does it all mean!?!
